Venezuela’s Machado Set for Meeting with Trump
The talks come in the wake of a U.S. military operation ordered by Trump that resulted in the Jan. 3 capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. Both were flown out of Venezuela and transferred to the United States, where they now face trial on firearms and weapons charges.
Despite the dramatic turn of events, Trump has withheld support for Machado’s bid to lead Venezuela. “I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader,” Trump said shortly after Maduro’s detention. “She doesn’t have the support within, or the respect within, the country. She’s a very nice woman, but she doesn’t have the respect.”
Machado, meanwhile, made headlines last week by declaring she wished to share or give her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump. The Norwegian Nobel Institute, however, stated the award is non-transferable.
