Venezuela’s interim leader says oil revenue will support healthcare
Speaking after a US announcement that it would “indefinitely control” Venezuelan crude oil sales, Rodriguez addressed how income generated from the energy sector would be used, as stated by state media. She explained that authorities have been developing a targeted program focused on healthcare, a sector that has suffered heavily during years of economic hardship.
Rodriguez said that every dollar entering the country from oil and natural gas activities would be allocated to addressing the needs of the health system. As part of this initiative, she noted that 75 medical facilities have already been identified for support under the plan.
She did not, however, comment on claims that revenues from Venezuela’s oil exports would be deposited into accounts overseen by Washington.
The remarks come as US President Donald Trump recently urged energy companies to invest $100 billion to revitalize Venezuela’s oil industry.
“We’re going to be extracting numbers in terms of oil like few people have seen,” he said Friday.
The proposal has faced resistance from within the oil industry, with senior executives describing Venezuela as an unattractive investment destination. Environmental organizations have also sharply criticized the idea.
“This is both reckless and dangerous,” said Mads Christensen of Greenpeace International. “The only safe path forward is a just transition away from fossil fuels.”
