Head of Russian Security Council in China for Talks

(MENAFN) Russia's Security Council confirmed Sunday that its Secretary Sergey Shoygu touched down in China for urgent consultations on deteriorating international and regional security conditions.

Shoygu is scheduled to confer with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the council's press office announced.

"On Feb. 1, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Sergey Shoygu, arrived in the People's Republic of China to hold negotiations with a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi," the statement said.

The announcement indicated the pair "will discuss the changed situation in the field of international and regional security."

Shoygu's arrival occurs against a backdrop of escalating US-Iran hostilities, marked by surging American military presence in the Middle East and Tehran's disclosure of forthcoming trilateral naval maneuvers with China and Russia in the northern Indian Ocean scheduled for mid-February.

Tuesday saw Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov conduct a video conference with his Chinese counterpart, Dong Jun. Their discussion centered on examining developments in Iran—where Washington struck Iranian nuclear installations in June 2025—and Venezuela, where a January 3 US military intervention led to the seizure and extradition of President Nicolas Maduro alongside his spouse, Cilia Flores. Belousov and Dong committed to implementing "relevant actions" accordingly.

Friday witnessed Russian President Vladimir Putin hosting Iran's Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, at the Kremlin.

January 2025 marked Russia and Iran's signing of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement containing mutual military assistance provisions if either nation faces attack. Iran maintains an equivalent pact with China, formalized in 2021.
